Waiting on God
This scripture came into my mind this morning.
Psalm 27:14 “Wait on the LORD; Be of good courage, and He shall strengthen your heart; Wait I say, on the LORD!”
I didn’t remember where these words were found, and had to look it up. Have I told you I love the
Psalms? I do. More on that later. I hope to unpack this chapter with you at a later time, as this is one of my favorite Psalms.
Are you a patient person? We live in a world of advancing technology. We have lots of information at our fingertips. With the internet, we can have things we want or need delivered to our doors. Many things in our lives are instantaneous.
Have you ever waited on God? I believe this is a practice or discipline that each Christ Follower needs to develop. Do you need an answer for some difficulty or situation you are facing? Maybe you are making a big decision, or praying for healing for yourself or a loved one. Or, you may need resolution of a relationship conflict, or a problem at work. You may have a loved one who you pray for, who needs to know Jesus and His saving grace. Have you prayed for this person for a long time? I would encourage you here - Don’t give up!
Matthew 7:7-8 “Ask, and it shall be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened.”
I’ve heard my Pastor say that when the scripture here says “ask, seek, and knock, it literally means keep on asking, keep on seeking, and keep on knocking. In other words, don’t give up!
Do you remember Daniel in the Old Testament? If you attended church as a youngster you probably were taught the story of Daniel and the lion’s den. Daniel was a prophet of God. In Daniel chapter 10, we read that Daniel’s prayers went unanswered for weeks because of a battle going on in the spiritual realm. An angel of the Lord was delayed in coming to him, as he was fighting with the “prince of the kingdom of Persia”. Now, isn’t that a thought - that nations may have a “prince” assigned to them? But God is greater! He is the God of angel armies. Daniel kept praying. We should do the same, as we wait on God.
1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 “Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.”
Psalm 130:5-6 “I wait for the LORD, my whole being waits, and in His word I put my hope. I wait for the Lord more that watchmen wait for the morning…”
Have you ever worked all night? Have you ever had a sleepless night? Have you spent a night in a hospital, praying, watching over a loved one who is ill? If you have, weren’t you relieved to see the dawn of a new day, realizing the long night was past? I know what the Psalmist is talking about here. The night can seem to stretch on forever. But there is hope with the morning.
How is your prayer life, friends? Do you seek God’s guidance? As you pray, have you learned to pause and wait in His presence, to hear what He speaks to you? This is a quiet practice that is a wonderful way to keep communication open with God. Here’s some more scripture in the Psalms.
Psalm 62:5-8 “My soul, wait silently for God alone, for my expectation is from Him. He only is my rock and my salvation; He is my defense; I shall not be moved. In God is my salvation and my glory; the rock of my strength and my refuge is in God. Trust in Him at all times, you people; Pour out your heart before Him; God is a refuge for us.”
Psalm 40:1 “I waited patiently for the LORD to help me, and He turned to me and heard my cry.”
God hears our cries, and our heart-felt prayers. The God of the universe “turns” to us, and hears us. Glory!
I’ll close this out with a few verses from the Book of James.
James 1:2-5 “My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience. But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing. If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally without reproach, and it will be given to him.”
