Patriot Express Newsletter Edition #311

Greetings and welcome to the Patriot Express Newsletter Edition #311 for September 2026.

Here we are as summer winds down and it's still as hot as it has been the past 90 days. I like to say it has been brutally hot. That's hotter than Africa hot to me. Been there, done that. I seriously thought last summer was the hottest, but this summer has felt even hotter. We had so much rain over July and parts of August with high humidity along with the heat, yet our ground and dirt are hard as a rock floor. The leaves are starting to fall from the trees due to dryness. I was really hoping for a golden autumn because of all the rain this summer. Fingers crossed.

August was another busy month for us with camping and trips to WV, Cincinnati, OH and Prepper Camp in Western, NC. Yes, it was hot at every stop. Matter of fact, in Western NC at Prepper Camp we really took note of the heat and struggles attendees appeared to have battling the upper 90s heat and humidity. Saying struggles is putting it mildly.

Ms. Lucy and I hosted a grill out at our camper for roughly 15 Hope for Survival sisters and brothers who attended Prepper Camp. Aside from the sweltering humidity and heat it was wonderful spending the evening together catching up. We had folks from VA, TN, NC, SC, GA, and AL together all weekend and it was great. It just ended to soon.

I'm excited for autumn ahead and hopefully the opportunity to get out and camp before winter. The peacefulness and separation from the rat race of the world is much needed. If the passing days and time is proving one thing, it is the importance of faith, family, friends, and community. It seems every day is a lie and having and holding on to the truth is critical.

Ding, Ding, Ding....Attention HFS readers..... Opinions shared in this newsletter are just that, opinions, and nothing more. Read at your own risk. The owner and author of this site is not responsible for hurt feelings or thin-skinned readers. I do my best to show restraint and respect to the best extent possible. I take as many precautions as possible and try to remain as nonpolitical as possible, however, there are times when I just can't help but point certain things out. Occasionally I use words only Patriots recognize and understand. It's not personal against any non-Patriot. It's just the truth. Sometimes we must pull up our spenders and suck it up. Just saying. Stay the course, read what you want, and avoid the rest. Avoid fear porn as much as possible and the day will be okay. When all else fails… Keep the faith and always have Hope.

Thoughts for the month - Can you handle the heat?

I never took the heat as a threat. I was young, in the military, and considered myself a tough guy. That's how it was supposed to be, right? I spent six months of one year in the hospital with kidney stones and all that goes with it. I still didn't learn the impact of heat on my body. It wasn't until my first deployment to the continent of Africa and the things I learned from our assigned medic who would bring is in each evening and hook us up to an IV to rehydrate us. This was on top of drinking about a gallon of water per hour. I witnessed what a failure to hydrate does to a human and the impact it has on the mission. Ever since then it is something that stands out in my mind.

As I mentioned above and pretty much all summer long, the heat has been brutal and how we adjust and handle it is different for our age, health, location and situation. Some of us can pick and choose when we go outdoors to do chores while others must be outside to homestead and grow crops and tend to animals. One of our biggest obstacles has become heat and humidity. Adapting and adjusting is the skill me must have, learn, or overcome to achieve objectives.

What I witnessed at the three-day Prepper Camp in late August really caught my attention. For those not familiar, it was an outdoor event held under tents and canopies by a large pond in a valley of sorts. There was no breeze or moving air it seemed. The heat seemed to be adding more humidity pulled from the pond located about 20 yards from the training area. The area was enclosed by tall, large trees around most of the perimeter. It was the perfectly designed sweat box with 97 degrees and around 90% humidity.

I was one of many who felt and appeared miserable. I was probably the only one attending who was alarmed by the impact of the heat and humidity, to include myself. From walking around the grounds class to class to walking down the gravel road to the training grounds and then the brutal climb out to each personal automobile. The event did offer a shuttle in and out, when available. Watching attendees try and trek up the gravel hill at the end of the day was even more of a signal to my concern and thinking.

My point here has nothing to do with Prepper Camp and everything to do with the impact of extreme heat and humidity in preppers who appeared overweight, out of shape, and somewhat defeated in this situation. I know for me, it was a "code red, 911" moment. I have been talking about the heat for a couple years now and seeing the impact with several hundred people was the postage stamp for me. Heat vs age is something we all should take note of. I have lived on the eastern coast of North Carolina, Guam in the Pacific region, St Louis, MO, Gulf Coast of Florida, and traveled in worked throughout Africa, and other Pacific region nations. I have been accustomed to heat my entire life. Now, at 65, it's a game changer. There is no doubt in mind the sun is stronger, and the heat today is different from 20 years ago.

Going forward, everything we do in preparedness planning outside must include the heat factor during spring, summer, and early autumn. Maybe work early morning or late evening. Hydration is critical. If elderly and working alone outdoors, maybe keep a handheld walkie talkie in your pocket to reach out during some form of emergency. Dehydration and heat stroke symptoms are not something to play with on any account. If your plan only has two people to work daily jobs around your property, the buddy system is so important to check and cross check one another for heat impact and illness before it starts.

My concern and why I am pointing this observation out is when one person goes down to heat illness, it severely impacts the mission and could be the cause of critical failures. You must have plans and backup plans in this area.

Remember, stay left of bang and remain outside the box.

Have a blessed month.

Let us move along.
